The meaning of KASA NIGHT  worldzen 2007-10-04

Street Outreach is one of DC Central Kitchen’s major programs for supporting our homeless friends.
One early bitter cold winter morning, our Sangha volunteered with Street Outreach. We were amazed at the large number of homeless friends who met the DCCK rescue vehicle for sandwiches, coffee, clothes and warm hugs. We wondered where they had stayed the prior night and saw everyone of them as a true fighter with the deadly cold of their night time city.

We see our homeless friends as zen monks except that they have no koan. Perhaps their koan is their nightly survival from the bitter cold. But one thing we should ask is by what means are they practicing it. Maybe we can show them by our compassionate activity.

During ancient times, people practiced at the cemetery to liberate themselves from the cycle of births and deaths. When the weather turned cold, they gathered pieces of cloth and sewed robes to keep themselves warm while practicing. They too did not have homes.
This practice of wearing robes is part of the Buddhist tradition known as
Kasa, the symbol of Buddha’s enlightenment and compassion.

On Kasa Night, we will celebrate with cultural music and meditate to encourage each other to awaken.

Please bring your Kasa, the strength of your own practicing, and let it cover our suffering friends’ cold mind with its original warmth.
